Anesthetic induction of juveniles of Rhamdia quelen and Ctenopharyngodon idella with Ocimum micranthum essential oil Ciência Rural
Zeppenfeld,Carla Cristina; Brasil,Marisa Teresinha de Bastos; Cavalcante,Gisela; Silva,Lenise Vargas Flôres da; Mourão,Rosa Helena; Cunha,Mauro Alves da; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
ABSTRACT: Anesthetics are effective to reduce or minimize stress in handling operations related to fish cultures. Aiming to avoid residual effects of synthetic drugs, several natural agents, such as essential oils (EOs), have been tested. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal concentration of the EO of Ocimum micranthum for induction of anesthesia in juveniles of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) and grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). Results demonstrated that the most suitable concentration to sedate silver catfish and carp is 25μL/L, while to anesthetize 200μL/L is more suitable for silver catfish and 100μL/L for grass carp, because these concentrations induce deep anesthesia in less than three min and recovery in less than five min....

Effect of phytase on digestibility of corn, sorghum and wheat bran by silver catfish (Rhamdia voulezi) Animal Sciences
Signor, Altevir; Lewandowski, Vanessa; da Silva, Rodrigo Aguiar; Fries, Edionei Maico; Schuller, Jean Marcel.
This study aimed to evaluate the digestibility of plant energetic ingredients, corn, sorghum and wheat bran, with and without phytase supplementation, in silver catfish (Rhamdia voulezi). The experimental design was completely randomized, represented by eight treatments, which consisted of the development of a reference diet and a test diet for each ingredient evaluated (corn, sorghum and wheat bran), with and without supplemental phytase. Diets were formulated so as to contain 70% reference feed and 30% test ingredient. The digestibility coefficients of dry matter and crude protein were significantly influenced only in relation to the evaluated ingredients. Phytase influenced the digestibility coefficients of energy and phosphorus, with interaction...

Essential oils of Cunila galioides and Origanum majorana as anesthetics for Rhamdia quelen: efficacy and effects on ventilation and ionoregulation Neotropical Ichthyology
Cunha,Jessyka A. da; Scheeren,Cecília Á.; Salbego,Joseânia; Gressler,Luciane T.; Madaloz,Laurício M.; Bandeira-Junior,Guerino; Bianchini,Adriane E.; Pinheiro,Carlos G.; Bordignon,Sérgio A. L.; Heinzmann,Berta M.; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated anesthetic efficacy and possible effects of the essential oils (EOs) of Cunila galioides (EOC) and Origanum majorana (EOO) on ventilatory rate (VR) and ionoregulation in Rhamdia quelen. In the anesthesia assessments, 50, 100, 200 and 300 μL L-1 EOC and 50, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 μL L-1 EOO were tested, and time for induction to sedation and anesthesia stages, as well as recovery, were taken. A second trial employed lower concentrations of both EOs, 10, 25, 50 and 100 μL L-1, in order to verify VR and Na+, K+ and Cl- whole body net fluxes. Sedation was achieved with both oils at 100 µL L-1, and anesthesia at ≥ 200 µL L-1. There was no significant difference between control and EO-treated groups regarding VR, but all fish...

Garlic essential oil increases rates of eggs fertilization and hatching of Rhamdia quelen larvae in an artificial incubation system Ciência Rural
Marengoni,Nilton Garcia; Pereira,Letícia Angélica; Weiss,Luciane Aline; Besen,Mateus Antonio; Bombardelli,Robie Allan.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of garlic (Allium sativum) essential oil on the rates of eggs fertilization and hatching and on the normal development of larvae of artificially incubated silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen). The experiment was carried out using a completely randomized experimental design with four treatments and five replicates. The treatments consisted of introducing garlic essential oil into the incubators, which used a closed system of water recirculation, at concentrations of 0, 1, 3, and 5mg L-1. Rates of eggs fertilization and larval hatching were determined at 10 and 24h after the beginning of eggs hydration. Morphology of larvae was assessed with the aid of a stereo microscope to determine the rate of...

Lethal concentration of clomazone, metsulfuron-metil, and quinclorac for silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen, fingerlings Ciência Rural
Miron,Denise dos Santos; Silva,Lenise Vargas Flores da; Golombieski,Jaqueline Ineu; Machado,Sérgio Luiz de Oliveira; Marchezan,Enio; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The goal of the present work was to determine the lethal concentration (LC50) (96h) of clomazone, metsulfuron-methyl, and quinclorac, herbicides used in rice culture, for the silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen. Fingerlings were exposed to different concentrations of the herbicides. The LC50s were 7.32µL L-1 for clomazone and 395mg L-1 for quinclorac. The LC50 for metsulfuron-methyl was not obtained since all fingerlings survived even at 1200mgL-1. Probably only clomazone can lead to mortality among silver catfish reared in the rice culture system.

Lethal temperatures for Rhamdia quelen larvae (Pimelodidae) Ciência Rural
Chippari-Gomes,Adriana Regina; Gomes,Levy Carvalho; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
The lower and upper lethal temperatures (LT50) of R. quelen larvae were determined. The larvae were obtained from two spawning periods with hatching temperatures of 21 and 26ºC respectively. Larvae were placed in tanks at which the temperatures were either increased 1ºC every 15min, or reduced 1ºC every 20min until larval movement ceased. This temperature was then maintained for 96h. Minimum mortality (29.0 ± 1.5%) was observed in the larvae held at hatching temperatures. The lower LT50 were 15.01 and 16.72ºC, and the upper LT50 were 29.25 and 27.83ºC for the larvae hatching at 21 and 26ºC, respectively. Thus, apparently there is no difference with relation to temperature change tolerance between larvae hatched in both temperatures.

Live and formulated diet evaluation through initial growth and survival of jundiá larvae, Rhamdia quelen Scientia Agricola
Carneiro,Paulo César Falanghe; Mikos,Jorge Daniel; Schorer,Marianne; Oliveira Filho,Paulo Roberto Campagnoli; Bendhack,Fabiano.
Live diet (LD) dependence and the lack of suitable formulated diets (FD) are major constraints for the expansion of larviculture of many fish species. The low digestibility and nutritional quality of FD are factors that might explain their failure as a stand-alone starter food. To determine whether FD in combination with LD (zooplankton) may efficiently increase larval growth and survival of jundiá (Rhamdia quelen), when compared to fish fed by either types of diet alone, jundiá larvae (5.57 mm; 1.41 mg) were initially stocked into 12 10-L aquaria (100 larvae per aquarium). Replicate groups (n=4) were fed ad libitum one of the three diets for 20 (when fed FD) or 48 days (when fed LD or the combined diets). Larvae fed FD alone presented significantly lower...

Participation of the GABAergic system in the anesthetic effect of Lippia alba (Mill.) N.E. Brown essential oil BJMBR
Heldwein,C.G.; Silva,L.L.; Reckziegel,P.; Barros,F.M.C.; Bürger,M.E.; Baldisserotto,B.; Mallmann,C.A.; Schmidt,D.; Caron,B.O.; Heinzmann,B.M..
The objective of this study was to identify the possible involvement of the GABAergic system in the anesthetic effect of Lippia alba essential oil (EO). We propose a new animal model using silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) exposed to an anesthetic bath to study the mechanism of action of EO. To observe the induction and potentiation of the anesthetic effect of EO, juvenile silver catfish (9.30 ± 1.85 g; 10.15 ± 0.95 cm; N = 6) were exposed to various concentrations of L. alba EO in the presence or absence of diazepam [an agonist of high-affinity binding sites for benzodiazepinic (BDZ) sites coupled to the GABA A receptor complex]. In another experiment, fish (N = 6) were initially anesthetized with the EO and then transferred to an anesthetic-free aquarium...

Plant essential oils against bacteria isolated from fish: an in vitro screening and in vivo efficacy of Lippia origanoides Ciência Rural
Bandeira Junior,Guerino; Souza,Carine de Freitas; Baldissera,Matheus Dellaméa; Descovi,Sharine Nunes; Silveira,Bibiana Petri da; Tasca,Caiane; Mourão,Rosa Helena Veras; Vargas,Agueda Palmira Castagna de; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
ABSTRACT: The use of natural products, such as essential oils (EOs), is a potential novel approach to treat fish bacterial infections with a lower risk of developing resistance. There has been a number of studies reporting the activity of EOs as those obtained from the species Achyrocline satureioides, Aniba parviflora, Aniba rosaeodora, Anthemis nobilis, Conobea scoparioides, Cupressus sempervirens, Illicium verum, Lippia origanoides, and Melaleuca alternifolia against bacteria. However, there are few studies investigating the effect of these EOs against fish bacteria. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of EOs against the following fish bacteria, Aeromonas hydrophila, Citrobacter freundii, and Raoultella...

Repeated stressors do not provoke habituation or accumulation of the stress response in the catfish Rhamdia quelen Neotropical Ichthyology
Koakoski,Gessi; Kreutz,Luiz Carlos; Fagundes,Michele; Oliveira,Thiago Acosta; Ferreira,Daiane; Rosa,João Gabriel Santos da; Barcellos,Leonardo José Gil.
Fish repeatedly experience stressful situations under experimental and aquaculture conditions, even in their natural habitat. Fish submitted to sequential stressors can exhibit accumulation or habituation on its cortisol response. We posed a central question about the cortisol response profiles after exposure to successive acute stressors of a similar and different nature in Rhamdia quelen. We have shown that successive acute stressors delivered with 12-h, 48-h, and 1-week intervals provoked similar cortisol responses in juvenile R. quelen, without any habituation or accumulation. The cumulative stress response is more associated to short acute stressors with very short intervals of minutes to hours. In our work, we used an interval as short as 12h, and no...

Sedative and anesthetic activities of the essential oils of Hyptis mutabilis (Rich.) Briq. and their isolated components in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) BJMBR
Silva,L.L.; Garlet,Q.I.; Benovit,S.C.; Dolci,G.; Mallmann,C.A.; Bürger,M.E.; Baldisserotto,B.; Longhi,S.J.; Heinzmann,B.M..
This study evaluated the sedative and anesthetic effects of the essential oils (EO) of Hyptis mutabilis (Rich.) Briq. and their isolated components on silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen). Quantitative chemical differences between the EOs obtained from leaves and inflorescences were verified, and a new chemotype rich in globulol was described. Although there were no significant differences in the time of induction for sedation and anesthesia between the EOs, only the leaf EO at 344 mg/L anesthetized all fish without side effects. Fractionation of the leaf EO was carried out by column chromatography. The isolated compounds [(+)-1-terpinen-4-ol and (-)-globulol] showed different activity from that detected for the leaf EO in proportional concentrations and...

The color of illumination affects the stress response of jundiá (Rhamdia quelen, Quoy & Gaimard, Heptapteridae) Ciência Rural
Barcellos,Leonardo José Gil; Ritter,Filipe; Kreutz,Luiz Carlos; Silva,Leonardo Bolognesi da; Cericato,Leonardo; Quevedo,Rosmari Mezzalira.
This paper provides the first data about physiological responses to stress in jundiá (Rhamdia quelen) exposed to different light colours. Jundiá is a species for fish production in the southern part of South America - and suitable for any region with a temperate or subtropical climates. In order to develop a light management for jundiá fingerlings during indoor maintenance and to understand the relationship between welfare and light colour in the jundiá, fingerlings were exposed to white, blue and green light. At the 10th day of light exposure an acute stressor was imposed. One hour after the application of the stressor, fish were sampled. Stress was assessed by means of cortisol determination. Our results show that green light seems to be the worst...
